Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several entry passages down to the depot... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their valour," Healey added. "They were part of a great many British personnel stationed over the festive period. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

During December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "major assault" against Daesh sites in the country, after an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
